I know what you’re thinking. Finally, Kat is posting tips on taking a good selfie! Or not. But regardless, some of you have asked for some selfie tips and tricks to up your selfie game. So here goes nothing!
First, some important elements. No, it’s not as easy as it looks. BUT, if you keep some of these things in mind, you can rock those selfies in no time. Note: No filters were used in the making of these selfies. Nor makeup. Ok eyebrows only.
Good lighting is probably the most important thing. I’m talking natural lighting, if at all possible. I am lucky enough to have big windows in my apartment and white walls for a backdrop. Here I am taking the same photo in the same spot in my apartment. First facing the window and the next with the window behind me. All the difference, right?
Ooo la la. Next?
What you got going on back there? No one needs to see all that shit in your apartment and/or car (#1 selfie location). Sorry Jack. notice good lighting in pic #1 and bad in #2.
I’m talking camera angle. Do you think any photo looks good when taken from down below? (Dudes are terrible at this – we see you taking a car selfie – just own it!). Once from above and once from below. Which version makes me look skinnier. Le duh.
Here, I’m not only talking distance to your face (further the better typically), I’m honing in on distance from your light source. This photo was taken way too close to the window (I’m talking like 1 foot away). So definitely test it out. Real photographers do test shots, why shouldn’t you test out that selfie?
What you looking at?
This is difficult if you’re jumping in on someone else’s selfie game, but not impossible. Once you have your angle, lighting and all of that buttoned up – make sure you look at the camera. See both examples below. Ha. I don’t know why this one makes me laugh – but it makes a difference, right?
Bonus for iPhone users
This little trick is one of my favorites, which ads a simple freshening up of any photo, if you ask me. See that little magic wand? All you have to do when you hit Edit photo, is simply press on it until it turns blue. I dig it, father.
So go out there and catch that beautiful butterfly, I mean selfie. And report back. I want to see master selfie skills on those Instagrams, kids!
