It’s no secret that I dislike cold weather. I left the northeast for many reasons after all, but mainly to avoid snow and all things chilly. So, when my girl Pamela and I decided to sign up for cryotherapy, I had to wonder if I temporarily lost my marbles.
Ah but, cryotherapy is a different kind of cold.
Cryotherapy, or cryo, started out in the fitness world. It’s a great way to repair tissue damage (hello working out) as well as inflammation reduction, increased cell rejuvenation, improvement of skin tone and anti-aging, as well as weight loss. That last one sold me, I’m not gonna lie.
We recently took a trip to a local spot – CHILL Cryosauna, in Orlando.
The facility is super cute and totally on brand. We had our blood pressure checked, and proceeded to get prepped for the impending 3 minute freezing. We stripped down – that’s right – nekkid for us, with only gloves and socks to keep our hands and feet from freezing off. Literally. Side note: dudes wear their underwear. We were ready. Or at least, as ready as we could be.
Look at all that nitrogen. Eek! It took only seconds for the chamber to cool down. Before hopping in, we had our skin temperature checked. I clocked in at 85 degrees.
Then, we stepped in and immediately removed our robes when the door closed to began the quick 3-minute process. Within the first minute, I started to lose feeling in my legs (totally normal). And then the adrenaline rush begins. Before you know it (seriously, it goes by quickly), you get handed your robe and jump out. Our heads were raised as you can see – no freezing of that head.
Afterwards, we had our skin temperature checked again. I went down to 27 degrees! We waited until we warmed up a bit to put our clothes on and start the rest of our day.
Other cool (pun intended) facts about cryotherapy are the effects that extend past the short freezing. Our bods remained cold internally for the rest of the day. Which meant, our bodies were working overtime to keep warm – not in a bad way – in a metabolism boosting short-term way. We spent a few hours looking for sunshine to warm up – but relished in the adrenaline rush that lasted the rest of the day.
You could say we’re hooked. We will definitely be back!
