When I think of travel, it echoes romantic feelings similar to a love affair. Starting with the adrenaline of the flights and hotel secured, an itinerary set…it quickly resonates to giddy excitement and a countdown until departure.
The days leading up to the journey are filled with joy and wonder. Will I love this city? And if I’ve been there before – will I find a new reason to fall in love?
There are so many cities that I’ve left my heart in. And I guess when I think of it, the first city that comes to mind isn’t a city at all. It’s just Hawai’i. The good, the bad, the busy, the perfect weather…and everything in between – she has stolen my heart. Not to be summed up to one small facet of an island – you see, each ones carries its own emotional pull…a draw to my heart that asks me to return.
Maybe it’s the North Shore, with the rustic grit of surfers mixed with local flair. Waves so large that you can’t comprehend riding them unless you’re talented. Or just really brave.
Or maybe it’s Hilo, nestled away on the Big Island. It’s where I can say that I found true peace. Sunrises by the water, and sunsets where you can see the sun pass below the clouds – all from atop your own slice of heaven on the dormant volcano of Mauna Kea.
A piece of my heart remains, but I’ll be back for it someday. Until next time, Hawai’i…
